DLNA, Easy Cross Content Sharing Between Gadgets


These days, a cross content sharing is a need for gadgets users. A cross content sharing means that users can enjoy a content wherever, every-time, and by using any gadgets. As example, users can enjoy a song from external speaker around the room while the song is played at a cell phone. Another example, users can enjoy a movie via their cell phone at bed-room even though the movie is played at living-room television. It is kind cool, isn’t it?

Back then, this kind of story only can be found at Hollywood futuristic movies. However, it is the reality now. If not mistaken, this cross content sharing had been available at the year 2003 but still use the costly advanced computer technology. It seems we will able to enjoy this cross content sharing via gadgets soon – no need to use the costly advanced computer technology and device anymore. It is possible by using Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technology.

DLNA - Digital Living Network Alliance

DLNA is a technology standard for photo, music, and video content sharing between the different device at home network. DLNA is also the name of the developer alliance that develop this technology standard. At the beginning, this standard is applied between computer (PC/Laptop) with home electronic device such as television. This system start to be integrated with the mobile gadgets such as cell phone since the year 2006.

The mobile gadgets that integrated with this DLNA technology are classified into:

#1. Mobile Digital Media Server (M-DMS

The wireless devices save the content and “share” it to mobile digital media players (M-DMP), digital media renderers (DMR) and digital media printers (DMPr) network. As example, the content sharing between cell phone and portable music player.

#2. Mobile Digital Media Player (M-DMP)

The wireless devices search and play the content at digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (M-DMS). As example, the content sharing between cell phone and mobile media tablet.

#3. Mobile Digital Media Uploader (M-DMU)

The wireless devices “upload” the content to digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (M-DMS). As example, the content sharing between the digital camera and cell phone.

#4. Mobile Digital Media Downloader (M-DMD)

The wireless search and download the content from digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (M-DMS). As example, the content sharing between music player and cell phone.

#5. Mobile Digital Media Controller (M-DMC)

The wireless devices search the content at digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (M-DMS) and upload to digital media renderers (DMR). As example, the content sharing between personal digital assistant (PDA) and cell phone.

    Why are Blackberry and Apple not getting on board with this? To upload the photos from my smartphone to my DMS (Media Server) for archiving or sharing later, or share a photo off my little phone to a DMR (Renderer) such as a 42″ TV…my god, the framework is here to do some of the coolest and convenient sharing, why haven’t RIM or Apple jumped on this?!
