The Versions of Android
Android as cell phone operating system (OS) comes from long history. It is started when Google acquires Android Inc which is a California startup company, in 2005. And then, at 2007, Google initiates the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) consortium which has 34 members that consists of technology companies. This OHA consortium who gave birth of Android as cell phone OS. The first Android SDK, 1.0 version is launched by OHA at October 2008 which continued by HTC Dream cell phone launching. HTC Dream is the first Android cell phone available. After that, Android seems in very fast growth.
Indeed, there are six Android versions that already launched since 2009 until now and there is one which plan to be launched soon. Froyo (version 2.2) is the latest launched Android version and Gingerbread (version 3.0) is the will be launched. Android version 1.1
Android version 1.1 is released at February 9th, 2009. Android version 1.1 offers better user interface than Android version 1.0. Also this version offers improvement of standard application such as alarm and message application.
Android version 1.5 (Cupcake)
Android version 1.5 (Cupcake) offer more improvement in user interface by using animation effect in it. However the mainstay improvement is in multimedia facility. This version adds video recording, A2DP supporting, and YouTube video uploading feature.
Android version 1.6 (Donut)
Android version 1.6 (Donut) is launched at Septermber 15th, 2009. If Android Cupcake is multimedia improvement, Android Donut is the network and connectivity improvement. This version offer full supporting for CDMA/EVDO, WiFi 802.1x, and VPN applet control.
Android version 2.0/2.1 (Eclair)
Android version 2.0/2.1 (Eclair) is released only in one month duration. The version 2.0 is released at December 3rd, 2009 which continued by version 2.1 launching at January 12nd, 2010. Android Eclair offer more improvement if compare with earlier versions. The improvement is both at hardware and software. As example, this version supports Microsoft Exchange, HTML5, digital zoom function, and multi-touch mode. The user interface also has significant improvement with Live Wallpaper feature.
Android version 2.2 (Froyo)
Android version 2.2 (Froyo) is officially released at May 20th, 2010 but there is the fixed release at June 20th, 2010 through OTA (Over The Air). This version offers faster hardware performance, application installation at external memory, Adobe Flash 10.1 supporting, WiFi feature which able to act as hotspot, automatic update at Android Market, and many others. Android version 2.2 (Froyo) is the improvement for the Android Eclair indeed.
Android version 3.0 (Gingerbread)
Android version 3.0 (Gingerbread) is the will be released Android version. Yes, it is not in market yet but it is said at the internet that this version will be released soon – at coming October exactly. Base on the infromation at internet, this Gingerbread version will offer music online shop through Android Market, user interface improvement, bigger resolution supporting, and copy-paste function improvement. This version requires 1 GHz CPU with 512 MB RAM plus 3.5 inch diagonal screen as cell phone spesification.
